The Jewish Genealogy Society of Tulsa & The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art First Edition Library Series present: The History of Jews and Judaism with Dr. Alan Levinson

Sunday, June 8, 2 pm | Jewish Federation

Dr. Levinson will discuss his new book titled: The History of Jews and Judaism:  Facts and Fiction. This is a timely and important resource about Jewish history and culture within contemporary discourse. He will discuss some of the most enduring andpernicious historical misconceptions about Jewish practice and faith. Examining many of the most widely held forms of antisemitic thinking, this addition to the Historical Facts and Fictions series addresses false beliefs about Jews and Judaism, among them that Jews in ancient Israel practiced Judaism, that Judaism opposes Christianity, that Jews are a race, and that Judaism thrived under Islam. Attendees will learn why particular misconceptions arose, how they spread, and the influence of the political, social, and economic contexts of the time. Finally, an exploration of the most plausible accounts of what happened provides readers with an informed understanding of historical facts.

Dr. Levenson is the Chair of the Schusterman/Josey Chair of Jewish History, Schusterman Center for Judaic and Israel Studies at the University of Oklahoma. The event is free but please RSVP.
